I couldn't agree more with your thoughts on tipping. It's unfortunate though that in a group situation, everyone's views clash on tipping and the people who tip based on ACTUAL service (not on 15% automatic) are the ones that get ripped off or roped into leaving more than they feel the service was worth. I have left $10 tips on small totals in the past because the service was beyond excellent. But if the service is bad (especially if the server's demeanour is terrible, or the food is awful and the mistakes not corrected), I'll leave no tip. Tipping should 100% be based on the quality of service and not be considered a given.
